Thakur Law Firm Honors the Memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020)

We, at Thakur Law Firm, APC, are filled with sadness at the loss of the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Justice of the Supreme Court, who passed away at the age of 87 on September 18, 2020. Justice Ginsburg was a consummate champion for justice and civil rights up until her very last days. As the second female jurist to serve on the high court, she presided with steadfast intelligence and cautious adherence to ethical standards. The attorneys and staff at Thakur Law Firm herby pledge to honor Justice Ginsburg’s legacy by fighting for the rights of our clients with passion and integrity.

After graduating from Columbia Law School, Ruth Bader Ginsburg gained national recognition in the 1960s as an ACLU lawyer advocating for women's equal rights.She strived to eradicate gender discrimination, arguing a series of important cases before the Supreme Court that led to precedents that expanded women’s rights and protections. One such case was Reed v. Reed, in which the Supreme Court struck down a law for the first time in history for treating women differently from men in violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

In 1972, Ginsburg accepted a job teaching at Columbia Law School, where she eventually became its first female tenured law professor. While she taught, she continued her advocacy work with the ACLU, founding the Women’s Rights Project and contributing to 34 Supreme Court cases, winning five of the six cases she argued before the court.

President Clinton nominated Ginsburg to the Supreme Court in 1993, where she was confirmed in a vote of 96 to 3 in the Senate. On the bench, she became a cultural icon, beloved for her vision and passion for women's rights from the bench. She soon earned a reputation for having a brilliant legal mind and indomitable spirit, with which she upheld and applied the Constitution with intelligence and passion. On the court, she continued her efforts for gender equality, writing the landmark decision in United States v. Virginia, which struck down the male-only admission policy at the Virginia Military Institute and established a new standard of review for sex discrimination cases. In 2007, by then the sole woman justice on the Court, Ginsburg unexpectedly and powerfully delivered her dissent from the bench in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., in which the majority ruled against the female plaintiff in her claim for unequal pay: “The court does not comprehend…the insidious way that women can be victims to discrimination,” she read. “The ball is in Congress’ court.” Just a few years later, Congress took up Justice Ginsburg’s challenge and passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was signed into law by President Obama.

The life’s work of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a model of integrity in the legal profession and represents values that are indispensable to our legal system, like the equitable application of the rule of law and protection of our individual liberties.
